Learn to be confident in yourself

Angad Singh is a senior student-athlete at Columbia University and an aspiring journalist who has used documentary film to combat the racism he faced as a teenager. Our #MCM is set on leaving some good behind in the world:

1. What's your story? What makes you unique?

I have 48 different colors of turbans, and at least one outfit to match each of them. Growing up in the South, my appearance and identity drew a lot of attention, especially after 9/11. I’m also 6’5” -- it’s easy to spot me in a crowd.

2. What motivates you?

I’m a storyteller at heart. I started out of necessity, using documentary film to combat the racism I faced as a teenage Sikh-American. Since then, I’ve found that sharing stories has a uniquely profound ability to change people, and I want to keep finding important stories to share with the world.

3. Who is a hero of yours?

Tintin is awesome, he’s inquisitive, brave, smart and just an awesome reporter who lives an adventurous life. I’ve always been inspired by and his faithful companion, Snowy.

Tintin comics are my favorite and I love reading them to my 5 year old sister.

4. What's your future plan? Your goals?

I want to be a face of news one day. But mainly to be happy and leave some good behind in the world.

5. If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?

Learn to be so confident in yourself that ideas, criticism and things that are different, conflicting, or new to you don’t scare you, but help you grow as a person.

6. What is something you feel strongly about (a cause, belief, etc.)?

Equality, trying to empathize with others’ experiences, and allowing people the space to be uniquely themselves.

7. What's one of the coolest things you've ever done?

I climbed on top of a crane on a 50 story skyscraper that was under construction in China. It was pretty scare but very exhilarating. Totally worth it.
