Gina Son is a SCAD graduate, graphic designer and account manager in Atlanta, Georgia. Outside of work, our #WCW loves to golf and explore all that Atlanta has to offer with her friends.
1. What's your story? What makes you unique?
I am a Midwest girl from Ohio that moved to Atlanta, Georgia on a full ride golf scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design six years ago, and I’ve never looked back. I’m not sure what makes me unique… I have a loud laugh that you could probably hear from a mile away, and I can eat more than anyone I know. I rather drink beer than wine, and I probably laugh at myself too much.
2. What motivates you?
My motivations come from wanting to be the better version of myself from the day before. I’m always striving to be the best I can, and although I’ll never be perfect, who wants to be anyways? I know I’ll be happy if I keep working hard and stay grateful for all the opportunities that present themselves to me.
3. Who is a hero of yours?
My sisters are my biggest heroes. They are completely different from one another, but both are so strong and independent. People may ask how can your heroes be completely different from one another, but that is what makes me so lucky to have them as role models. I feel like I’m a little mix of both of them and as I grow older, I learn from them in different aspects in my life that help shape me into the best version of myself that I can be.
4. Give us a road map of your career. How did you get to where you are today?
In college, I was always conflicted with whether I wanted to go into the design side or account management/sales side. Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising, I was able to explore different opportunities. No one is 100% sure how their career path will lay out after college, and I was probably -10% sure. I’ve been pretty lucky because I’m able to do both sides of my field. I started off in the account management/sales side, and then moved back into the graphic design world. Both are great, and honestly I am two years out of college, yet I still love both sides. I’ve been able to design mobile applications for great clients such as the LA Ram’s Stadium, iHeartRadio, The Weeknd Tour, etc. I just love the mix of being able to hide behind a computer all day designing, while being able to be out with clients, grab a beer and just get to know one another. I wouldn’t have my career path any other way.
5. What's your future plan? Your goals?
As fun as my career has been so far, I’ve always seen myself as a boss lady for my own company. I hope to one day be able to go into business with my sisters, and create a company for a cause. We all have our specialties, and just thinking about what the Son sisters could do together in the future drives me to work hard every day.
6. If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Two pieces of advice:
Jump out of your comfort zone and take chances that scare the shit out of you. Each choice you make shapes you in ways you never thought possible.
And stay humble. Always.
7. What is something you feel strongly about (a cause, belief, etc.)?
Preemptive Love Coalition. What they stand for and who they stand for align with my beliefs. I believe that we need to love no matter what, talk about/fight for what we believe, and look at the bigger picture instead of focusing on the little things in life that don’t matter as much.
8. What's one of the coolest things you've ever done?
One of the coolest things I’ve ever done was when I got to fly around Atlanta with a client and be the pilot of the plane by myself. It was such a thrilling evening and I can definitely check that off my bucket list. So lame but yes, I have a bucket list. I’ve never been so nervous and excited at the same time since I was a kid. Sometimes, as adults, we forget to explore and do things out of our comfort zone. Always remember that feeling is so important to have.
